non-knitting stuff

I work for a huge law firm . . . seriously huge . . . several U.S. offices with an equal number of non-U.S. offices. I've been here for years (30+) and have worked for the same partner (the "Boss") for substantially all of that time, along with a variety of other characters. To be honest, it is a really good place to work and people stay. I am not tops in seniority.

Actually, many people asked me what I was going to do with my recently completed MBA. I usually shrugged with the thought that I wasn't doing anything with it until the Boss retired.

The Boss is retiring. Early. He is 63.

This is early for here, even with the lawyers having a mandatory retirement of December 31 of the year they turn 65, most of them still hang around for years and years (including one of my other assignments who I have been working for since his retirement 14 years ago).

So, the Boss is retiring. He told me six weeks ago. He told the managing partner and the partner in charge of our office. And me. No one else knows, supposedly.

While on vacation, I got a phone call from the Firm Administrator asking me to call him. Bottomline, he offered me a job. He had heard that I had gotten my MBA, assumed that I wanted to make use of it and offered me a job, as a manager, although they haven't figured out a title. The kicker is that they have a basis for the job (relocations -- we move lawyers around here like other people move furniture) and has incredibly "growth potential" (his words). The bigger kicker is that it would start the beginning of the year. The reason he called me was that he wanted to put a claim in before anyone else did? Huh? Then the next thing out of his mouth is "my concern though is about your assignments. You have been working for 'the Boss' for 30+ years, this job would be full-time, requiring your moving to a department in the Firm, and so what about 'the Boss'?"

You know sometimes things just fall in your lap.
