Lindsey has orientation on Thursday morning, August 23, from 8:00 to 11:00 with a full day starting on Monday, August 27.
Zachariah starts with partial days on Thursday and Friday, August 23 and 24, school until 1:30, no cafeteria service.
Dave, because he is a teacher, started last week with getting his classroom ready, all day meetings last Thursday and Friday, August 16 and 17, and mandatory time in the school on Monday through Wednesday of this week, with classes starting on Thursday, August 23.

- I despise partial days, half days, early dismissals, etc. Despise. The school where Dave teaches and where Zachariah is in second grade does this occassionally, the first couple days of the school year is a prime example, during the Polish Festival in mid-October, and at the end of the year. It is annoying.
- Imagine my joy when I read that Lindsey's school is going to have an early release EVERY Wednesday. Now, we are not talking two or three hours. But, every Wednesday, classes will get out at 2:30. Also, the last Tuesday of the month, there will be an early dismissal at 1:08. ????? They had good reasons for this. I originally thought these days were to be in lieu of "teacher's days" but, no, they have those too. The related reason is that these early dismissals days will give the teachers opportunities to meet and take care of administrative details . . . or some such stuff. Yep.
So, does anyone want to explain to the school administration that early dismissals play havoc with those of us who have to work a regular work day in the business world? I have tried. Really, I have. Last year when Lindsey was in 8th grade, I had the discussion with her principal and was told that "this works out better for everyone involved." Really? Hmmm, I don't know of a single teacher who takes the BUS to school. Hopefully, the busses for Lindsey's new high school know about this wonderfully flexible and changing schedule. Because according to the bus schedule, the bus picks up the boys from an all boys' high school before it picks up the girls at the all girls' high school and the boys don't have these early dismissals.
- Uniforms . . . on the other hand I LOVE uniforms. I want to wear uniforms. To be able to not have to decide what it is that you are going to be wearing each day (is it clean? ironed? presentable? appropriate (i.e., do I have a meeting or luncheon)?). To be really honest, most people probably consider my wardrobe a uniform. I have three pairs of navy and black slacks, two pairs of brown, a couple of skirts, and several tops. I rarely wear the skirts. I don't like wearing pantyhose and cannot stand to wear a skirt without them. Putting pantyhose on is an aerobic exercise. Seriously!
- My two younger kids wear uniforms. I spent about $300 for Lindsey's stuff (skirt, sweater, polo shirts (5), tights, knee highs, clogs) and most of it should last her (except the footwear) through 12th grade. Zachariah wears a red polo shirt, navy or black trousers and dark dress shoes. On gym day, they are allowed to wear their gym clothes (red shorts/white t-shirt) under their uniform. It is a beautiful thing.
I do like the kids schools. I do think they should have more parental input when they are doing the calendars.

I gotta tell you, we hate those half days as much as you do. They are usually a big waste of time. Administration doesn't listen to us anymore than they do to you!
And BTW - your wardrobe sounds just like mine!
