When we were perusing the silent auction items, there was a basket with a variety of yarns, needles and a pattern book . . . hmmmm . . . valued by the donor at $150.00. My DH wanted to bid on it but I told him to refrain. For that kind of money, I wanted to pick my own yarn.
On the other side of the room was another knitting item. It included the pattern for this bag:

seven skeins of Cascade 220 in a variety of colors, including a dark, almost black, blue, and a lavendar, plus one skein of a Chrystal Palace Fizz (for the centers of the flowers), and another skein of another yarn (which I forget what it was), the plastic handles and a $20 gift card to a LYS. Someone put the value on the item at $80 with a starting bid of $20. Hello? I won it for $45.
We also won two nights at the Put-in-Bay resort, two tickets to Clague Playhouse and dinner at the 100th Bomb Group and an incredible gift basket. Great fun.
The other thing that was great was that after the benefit (which ended by 8:30), we went out to dinner with a dear friend. Her husband has Alzheimers and she is the one who had invited us to the benefit. Her husband got ill over Labor Day and was in the hospital for a couple of days. She was not able to take him home but had to put him in rehab. He is not doing well and this evening was the first time that she had not been going either back and forth to the hospital or the nursing facility. We went to a very nice, quiet little restaurant that prides itself on its wonderful pasta dishes and service. All in all, the whole evening was great!

Hey, thanks for adding me on the links bar over at the KAL.
Right now I am on a research fellowship from the Japanese government - it's like a Fulbright, but 18 months as opposed to 10. Not particularly in a grad school here, though I am affiliated with one for research purposes, and this fall I am applying to Ph.d programs in Japanese history back in the US for Fall 2008.
Love the silent auctions and it sounds like a wonderful evening for a great cause.
thank you for welcoming me to the grey's KAL (your daughter will love those fetching's - I promise!) funny I didn't think to check out your blog before I asked to join - but I love what you're doing and maybe we have a few things in common! ...off to watch my first grey's and do some knitting! - M.
Thanks for inviting me to the KAL! You definitely got a great deal with those Cascade skeins and the pattern. The bag looks lovely--is it a Noni pattern? If not, it really resembles one. I'm sure it will turn out looking beautiful.
